The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has issued a 30-day ultimatum to developers and property owners who have built structures near aerodromes without approval.
In a public notice, the authority said no one is allowed to construct, erect or alter any building within a 15-kilometre radius of an aerodrome without written approval from KCAA. The rule applies to all international and domestic aerodromes across the country.
KCAA said anyone planning to build near an aerodrome must first apply for authorization so the authority can review and approve the acceptable building height before construction begins. Application details and guidance are available on the KCAA website or through its official email.
The authority also directed that all buildings and structures within aerodrome areas must be fitted with Class B medium-intensity aeronautical obstacle lights. These lights should be installed on the highest points of buildings or on aerial masts, as required under the Civil Aviation (Aerodromes) Regulations, 2013.
Further guidance on the lighting and marking of obstacles is provided in an advisory circular available on the KCAA website.
To illustrate the affected areas, KCAA said several neighbourhoods within a 15-kilometre radius of Wilson Airport fall under the directive. These include Nairobi West, Madaraka, South B, South C, Lang’ata, Karen, Kibera, Ngong Road, Ongata Rongai, Kabete and surrounding areas, among others.
“All owners, lessors and lessees of affected developments are given 30 days’ notice from the date of this publication to install the required obstacle lights,” KCAA said. The authority warned that failure to comply will lead to enforcement action as provided by law.
