    Early Life

Kenzo Takada was born in Himeji, Japan, in 1939. Although he briefly attended Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, he left to pursue his passion for fashion. He later enrolled at Bunka Fashion College, becoming one of its first male students — a bold move in an industry then dominated by women.

After completing his studies, Takada moved to Paris in the mid-1960s. Initially planning to stay for just six months, he ended up living there for more than five decades.

    Struggles

Success did not come immediately. Takada faced financial hardship and cultural barriers during his early years in Paris. His breakthrough came in 1970 when he opened his first boutique, Jungle Jap, a vibrant store that reflected his eclectic aesthetic and multicultural influences.

His designs quickly gained attention after a model wearing his work appeared on the cover of ELLE magazine. By the early 1970s, he was showcasing collections in Tokyo and New York and earned recognition from Japan’s fashion establishment.

    Rise of the Kenzo Brand

Takada’s brand became known for its bold prints, rich colors, and fusion of Eastern and Western styles. Key milestones include:

    • 1970 — Opened first boutique in Paris
    • 1971 — Showcased collections internationally
    • Early 1980s — Introduced menswear
    • 1988 — Launched first fragrance, Kenzo de Kenzo
    • 2001 — Introduced KenzoKI skincare line

His perfumes and lifestyle products expanded the brand into a global luxury powerhouse.

    Sale to LVMH

In 1993, Takada sold the Kenzo brand to LVMH for approximately $80 million. He remained involved with the company until 1999 before stepping back from fashion design.

During retirement, he explored creative ventures including interior design and home goods, demonstrating his enduring artistic vision.
