    Early Life

Silas Chou was born into a prominent business family in Hong Kong. His father, Chao Kuang-piu, founded South Ocean Knitters, which became one of Asia’s largest knitwear manufacturers and exporters.

Through his family’s business connections, Chou met Lawrence Stroll in the 1980s, forming a partnership that would reshape the global fashion industry.

    Sportswear Holdings

In 1989, Chou and Stoll launched their investment vehicle Sportswear Holdings. That same year, they were introduced to emerging designer Tommy Hilfiger and made a decisive move to acquire majority control of his brand.

Under their leadership, the label grew rapidly during the 1990s:

    • Sales reached $25 million in 1992
    • Climbed to $70 million in 1993
    • Surpassed $100 million in 1994
    • Exceeded $1 billion annually by the late 1990s
    • Approached $2 billion revenue by 2000

The brand’s preppy, all-American aesthetic resonated with youth culture worldwide, cementing its place as a defining fashion label of the era.

The company went public in 1992 and was later sold in 2006 to Apax Partners for approximately $1.6 billion.

    Capri Holdings

Building on their success, Chou and Stroll invested in and developed multiple fashion brands, including:

    • Karl Lagerfeld brand ventures
    • Pepe Jeans
    • Michael Kors

In 2003, they acquired a majority stake in Michael Kors for $100 million and later oversaw its successful 2011 IPO.

In 2017, Michael Kors Holdings acquired Jimmy Choo Ltd for nearly $1 billion. A year later, the company purchased Versace for $2.1 billion. Following these acquisitions, the company rebranded as Capri Holdings.

Today, Capri Holdings generates billions in annual global revenue.

    Real Estate

In 2002, Chou and Stroll leased prime retail space in Trump Tower from Donald Trump. The space became the New York flagship store for Asprey & Garrard in 2003.

    Motorsport

Lawrence Stroll’s passion for motorsports led to joint ventures with Chou in the racing world. In 2018, Chou participated as an investor when Stroll acquired the Formula One team Racing Point F1 Team.

In January 2020, Chou was also a minority partner when Stroll led the acquisition of a 17% stake in Aston Martin.
