If you enjoy bold spices and smoky flavors, learning how to make chicken tikka at home is a rewarding experience. Chicken tikka is a popular grilled dish made with marinated chicken pieces that are tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. It originates from the Indian subcontinent and is widely enjoyed in countries such as India and beyond. Traditionally cooked in a clay oven known as a tandoor, chicken tikka can easily be prepared in a regular oven, on a stovetop, or even on a grill. With the right marinade and proper cooking method, you can achieve restaurant-style results in your own kitchen.

      Ingredients You Will Need

The key to delicious chicken tikka lies in a rich, spiced yogurt marinade. Gather the following ingredients before you begin.

    • 500 grams boneless chicken pieces
      • 1 cup plain yogurt
      • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
      • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
      • 1 teaspoon paprika
      • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
      • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
      • 1 teaspoon garam masala
      • ½ teaspoon turmeric
      • 1 teaspoon chili powder, adjust to taste
      • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
      • Salt to taste

You may also add a pinch of red food coloring for a more traditional appearance, though this is optional.

    1. Preparing and Marinating the Chicken

Start by washing and patting the chicken dry. Cut it into medium-sized cubes to ensure even cooking.

In a large bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, ginger-garlic paste, oil, and all the spices. Mix well to form a smooth marinade.

Add the chicken pieces to the bowl and coat them thoroughly with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. For deeper flavor, marinate overnight. The yogurt helps tenderize the chicken while the spices infuse it with rich taste.

    1. Cooking the Chicken Tikka

If using an oven, preheat it to 200°C. Thread the marinated chicken pieces onto skewers or place them on a lined baking tray.

Bake for about 20 to 25 minutes, turning halfway through. For a slightly charred finish, switch to the grill setting for the last few minutes.

If using a stovetop, heat a grill pan over medium heat and cook the chicken pieces, turning occasionally, until fully cooked and lightly charred on the outside. Ensure the internal temperature is safe and the juices run clear.

Avoid overcooking, as this can make the chicken dry.

    1. Serving Suggestions

Chicken tikka is best served hot and pairs well with simple accompaniments.

    • Fresh salad with onions and lemon
      • Mint chutney
      • Naan or flatbread
      • Steamed rice

You can also use chicken tikka as a filling for wraps or add it to salads for a protein boost.
