    Olga Teresa Tañón Ortiz was born on April 13, 1967, in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and raised in Levittown, Toa Baja. The youngest of four children, she began singing at age eight in her church choir and participated in school performances and talent competitions.

    Her entry into merengue came unexpectedly. At age 19, she attended what she believed was a rock band audition but discovered it was a merengue group led by Ringo Martínez. Encouraged to try the genre, she discovered her natural talent for it.

    Tañón’s professional career began in the 1980s with the merengue group Las Nenas de Ringo y Jossie. She later joined the all-female group Chantelle, gaining wider recognition with the hit song “Queriendo y No.”

    Solo Career

    Tañón launched her solo career in 1992 after signing with WEA Latina. Her debut album Sola marked the beginning of a highly successful run.

    Her breakthrough international hit came with “Es Mentiroso” from the 1994 album Siente el Amor. In 1995, she released Nuevos Senderos, collaborating with Mexican singer Marco Antonio Solís. The album’s lead single “Basta Ya!” topped the U.S. Billboard Top Latin Tracks chart and became her first No. 1 hit.

    Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, she blended merengue, pop, and tropical sounds, building a diverse catalog and expanding her fan base internationally.

    In 2005, Tañón revealed that her daughter Gabriella has Sebastian syndrome, a rare condition affecting only a small number of people worldwide.
