    Elizabeth Anne Vargas was born on September 6, 1962, in Paterson, New Jersey. Her father served as a U.S. Army colonel, which led the family to live in Okinawa, Belgium, Germany, and several U.S. states. She graduated from high school in Heidelberg, Germany, and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1984.

    Career

    Vargas began her journalism career while studying at the University of Missouri, working for KOMU-TV. She later reported for local stations before joining NBC News as a correspondent and substitute anchor.

    Her national profile rose after moving to ABC News, where she served as a newsreader for Good Morning America and later anchored weekend editions of World News Tonight. Following the death of Peter Jennings, Vargas became co-anchor of the flagship evening broadcast.

    She remained a leading figure at ABC for two decades, co-anchoring 20/20 and hosting major network specials until stepping down in 2017.

    Television Projects After ABC

    After leaving ABC, Vargas expanded her work across multiple networks and formats. She hosted A&E Investigates beginning in 2018 and later led the revival of America’s Most Wanted. She also hosted and executive produced the syndicated series iCrime with Elizabeth Vargas and began anchoring Elizabeth Vargas Reports in 2023.

    In addition to journalism, Vargas has made guest appearances on television dramas and appeared in the 2017 film Life.
