Mike Rounds is a prominent American politician and businessman who serves as the junior United States Senator from South Dakota, a Republican position he has held since January 2015.

He previously served as the 31st Governor of South Dakota from 2003 to 2011.

Born Marion Michael Rounds on October 24, 1954, in Huron, South Dakota, he is the son of Joyce and Don Rounds.

He grew up in Pierre, South Dakota, after his family moved there in his childhood, where his father worked in state government roles such as director of highway safety.

Rounds earned a Bachelor of Science in political science from South Dakota State University.

    Siblings

Mike is the eldest of seven children in a large Catholic family that valued faith, hard work, and community service.

His siblings are Tim Rounds, Jamison Rounds, Tom Rounds, Dennis Rounds, Michele Brich, and Jamie Rounds.

His brother Tim Rounds (born 1959) served as a Republican in the South Dakota House of Representatives for District 24 (including Pierre) from 2003 to 2011 and from 2013 to 2021.

Other brothers have been involved in local businesses, such as Thomas and Jamison Rounds, who founded and operated a craft distillery in Pierre.

    Career

After college, he returned to Pierre and joined an insurance and real estate firm that became Fischer, Rounds & Associates, establishing a successful career before politics.

He engaged early in the South Dakota Republican Party and various boards.

In 2002, he won a major upset in the Republican gubernatorial primary and then the general election, serving two terms as governor from 2003 to 2011.

His administration emphasized business-friendly policies, resulting in strong economic growth, low unemployment, and South Dakota maintaining one of the nation’s lowest per capita tax burdens.

After his governorship, he won election to the U.S. Senate in 2014 and took office in 2015.

In the Senate, he serves on committees including Armed Services, Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, Veterans’ Affairs, and Environment and Public Works, focusing on cybersecurity, rural development, veterans’ issues, and defense.

    Accolades

Rounds has earned recognition for his leadership and service to South Dakota.

His 2002 primary victory remains one of the state’s most notable political upsets.

As governor, he was praised for economic stewardship and fiscal responsibility.

In the Senate, he is respected for his work on cybersecurity in the Armed Services Committee and advocacy for rural states.
