If you are looking for a calming herbal drink with deep cultural roots, learning how to make impepho tea is a wonderful place to start. Impepho, also known as African wormwood, is a traditional herb widely used in Southern Africa for its soothing aroma and wellness benefits. For generations, communities have used it in spiritual rituals, as a natural remedy, and as a comforting herbal infusion. Today, many people are rediscovering impepho tea as part of a natural, holistic lifestyle.

Impepho is commonly associated with cleansing and relaxation. When brewed as a tea, it produces a fragrant, slightly bitter drink that can be enjoyed warm, especially during cold evenings or when you need comfort and calm. Making impepho tea at home is simple and requires only a few ingredients.

      What is Impepho?

Before preparing the tea, it helps to understand the herb itself.

Impepho refers to several species of the plant in the genus Helichrysum, particularly those traditionally used in Southern Africa. The leaves are typically dried and can be burned as incense or brewed into tea.

    Key characteristics of impepho include:

    • A strong, earthy aroma
    • Silvery-green leaves
    • A slightly bitter taste when brewed
    • Traditional use for relaxation and cleansing

You can find dried impepho at local herbal markets, traditional medicine shops, or trusted online stores that sell African herbs.

    1.  Ingredients and Tools

To make impepho tea, you do not need complicated equipment. Keep it simple and natural.

    You will need:

    • 1 teaspoon of dried impepho leaves
    • 1 cup of water
    • A small pot or kettle
    • A strainer
    • A cup or mug

Optional additions if you want to soften the taste:

    • Honey
    • Lemon
    • A slice of fresh ginger

Using clean, filtered water will improve the overall taste of your tea.

    1. Boil the Water Properly

Pour one cup of water into your kettle or pot and bring it to a gentle boil. Avoid overboiling for too long, as extremely hot water left boiling for extended periods can affect the flavor of herbal teas.

Once the water reaches a rolling boil, remove it from the heat source.

    1. Add the Impepho Leaves

Place the dried impepho leaves into your cup or teapot. Pour the hot water directly over the leaves.

Allow the tea to steep for about 5 to 10 minutes. The longer you steep, the stronger and more bitter the tea will become. If you are new to impepho tea, start with a shorter steeping time and adjust according to your taste preference.

    During steeping, you may notice:

    • A golden or light brown color developing
    • A strong herbal fragrance
    • A slightly earthy scent filling the room
    1. Strain and Serve

After steeping, use a strainer to remove the leaves. Your impepho tea is now ready to drink.

If desired, you can enhance the flavor by adding:

    • A teaspoon of honey for sweetness
    • A squeeze of lemon for freshness
    • A small slice of ginger for warmth

Stir gently and enjoy while warm.

    1. Drink Responsibly

While impepho tea is natural, moderation is important. Herbal teas can have strong effects, especially if consumed in large quantities. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing a medical condition, consult a healthcare professional before using impepho regularly.

Start with one cup per day and observe how your body responds.
