Kirk Hammett is an acclaimed American musician best known as the lead guitarist of the influential heavy metal band Metallica.

Born Kirk Lee Hammett on November 18, 1962, in San Francisco, California, he grew up in the Bay Area with a mixed heritage that includes Filipino descent from his mother, Teofila “Chefela” Oyao (of Cebuano origin), and English, German, Scottish, and Irish ancestry from his father, Dennis L. Hammett, a merchant mariner.

His early life was shaped by family influences, including a passion for horror films sparked in childhood after an injury led to television watching, as well as an introduction to music through his siblings’ interests.

Kirk has at least two siblings: an older brother named Rick Hammett and a sister, Tracy Hammett.

His brother Rick played a pivotal role in his musical development by exposing him to an extensive record collection featuring artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and UFO, which ignited Hammett’s interest in guitar playing.

He has occasionally referenced a sister in anecdotes, including a childhood fight that contributed to his early immersion in horror media.

Career

Hammett’s career began in the late 1970s when he co-founded the thrash metal band Exodus in the Bay Area scene.

He gained local recognition as a skilled guitarist before a major turning point in 1983, when Metallica, seeking a replacement for Dave Mustaine, invited him to audition.

Hammett flew to New York for the tryout and quickly joined the band, contributing to their debut album Kill ‘Em All by re-recording guitar parts.

Since then, he has been a core member of Metallica, helping shape their sound through iconic albums like Ride the Lightning (1984), Master of Puppets (1986), …And Justice for All (1988), the self-titled Black Album (1991), and later releases including 72 Seasons (2023).

His distinctive lead guitar style, blending melodic solos with aggressive thrash riffs, has become a hallmark of the band’s music.

Beyond Metallica, Hammett has pursued solo interests, including his horror memorabilia collection and the book Too Much Horror Business.

Accolades

Hammett was ranked number 11 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003, and in 2023, he and bandmate James Hetfield were co-ranked 23rd on an updated version of the list.

In 2009, he placed number 15 in Joel McIver’s book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists.

With Metallica, he has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 (alongside current and former members) and has won multiple Grammy Awards as part of the band, including for Best Metal Performance and other categories across various albums.

Metallica’s collective success under his tenure includes numerous American Music Awards, massive global sales, and recognition as one of the most influential heavy metal acts in history.
