Detectives are investigating an incident where a miner was shot and killed at a gold mining site in Kalemungorok area, Aroo, Turkana County.
Police said Mohamed Hussein, 43 was a manager at the site when he was shot by unknown gunmen on Tuesday March 4, 2026.
He was shot at close range by gunmen who escaped the scene soon after the afternoon incident. The motive of the shooting was not immediately known, police said.
Police visited the scene and established a group of miners were at the site when the shooting happened. The deceased had traveled from Mombasa to the area for gold mining business.
The shooting sparked tension in the area amid fears of attacks by the gunmen.
Police said they were investigating the motive and those behind the incident. The body was transported to Mombasa for a planned burial amid investigations.
Elsewhere in Ndori, Siaya County, a miner died at a gold mining site after its tunnel collapsed and trapped him.
The 34-year-old miner was at the St Martin Artisan mining site on Wednesday when the incident happened, police said.
Police visited the scene and confirmed the miner had died and his body had been retrieved by other colleagues.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other investigations.
Such deaths have been on the rise at gold mining sites amid a campaign for safe mining in general.
Police say at least two miners are killed weekly at gold mining sites in the country.
And a group of surveyors was attacked and seriously wounded at a gold mining site in Ramula, Yala, Siaya County.
The group had gone to the site for a survey after being contracted by Shanta Gold Company when rowdy goons attacked them on Wednesday morning.
A group of locals called Obwanda A and Nyangulu B had opposed the process and turned violent as the surveyors conducted a data validation exercise for the company targeting the mining project affected persons.
Police rescued the three workers from the rowdy group. The driver was injured while a car they had overturned into a ditch, police said.
Police said they will enhance patrols in the area for the safety of all amid investigations into the incident.
Gold mining businesses are turning lucrative and dangerous in some areas in the country amid efforts to make the same safer.
