Smith developed his passion for music early on, influenced by his childhood friend and future bandmate Dave Murray.

    Siblings

Smith has an older brother and a sister, namely Patrick Smith and Kathleen Smith.

He began playing guitar as a teenager, initially using an old Spanish guitar that belonged to his brother before acquiring another instrument affordably from Murray.

    Career

Smith’s career spans several decades and includes multiple phases.

He started in the 1970s by co-founding the band Urchin (initially known as Evil Ways) with Dave Murray, where he gained early experience as a guitarist and performer.

In October 1980, he joined Iron Maiden, replacing guitarist Dennis Stratton, just as the band was rising to prominence.

Smith contributed to classic albums such as Killers (though he joined post-recording for that one, his impact began with The Number of the Beast in 1982), Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

He co-wrote many of the band’s most enduring songs, including “2 Minutes to Midnight,” “Wasted Years,” and “Stranger in a Strange Land.”

In 1990, Smith left Iron Maiden to pursue other projects, including forming ASAP (Adrian Smith and Project) and later Psycho Motel, as well as collaborating with Bruce Dickinson on his solo work.

He rejoined Iron Maiden in 1999 alongside Dickinson, revitalizing the band’s lineup for albums like Brave New World onward.

In recent years, he has also explored side projects such as Smith/Kotzen with Richie Kotzen, releasing collaborative albums that showcase his versatility beyond heavy metal.

Throughout his tenure with Iron Maiden, Smith has earned widespread acclaim for his melodic guitar style, harmonized leads with Dave Murray, and songwriting contributions that helped define the band’s epic sound.

    Accolades

Notable accolades include induction into the Hollywood RockWalk in 2005 as part of Iron Maiden, multiple Grammy nominations (with a win for Best Metal Performance in 2011 for “El Dorado” from The Final Frontier), and consistent recognition in polls as one of the greatest metal guitarists by publications like Guitar World and Metal Hammer.

His work has sold millions worldwide, cementing his legacy in rock history.
