    Early Life

Max Holloway was born Jerome Max Kelii Holloway on December 4, 1991, in Honolulu to parents Missy and Mark. He is of Native Hawaiian and Samoan heritage.

Holloway had a difficult childhood. Both of his parents struggled with drug addiction, and his father was reportedly abusive toward his mother before leaving the family when Holloway was 11 years old.

Despite these challenges, Holloway found direction through sports. He attended Waianae High School, graduating in 2010. During his teenage years, he began training in kickboxing. After only three days of training, he entered his first amateur fight and won—an early sign of the talent that would later define his career.

    Start of MMA Career

Holloway began his professional mixed martial arts career in 2010 with the Hawaii-based promotion X-1.

In his debut fight, he defeated Duke Saragosa by unanimous decision. He then continued his early winning streak by defeating Bryson Kamaka, Harris Sarmiento, and Eddie Rincon.

In 2011, Holloway captured the X-1 Lightweight Championship after defeating Sarmiento, establishing himself as one of Hawaii’s rising MMA stars.

    UFC Career

Holloway made his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in early 2012 as a late replacement for Ricardo Lamas at UFC 143. He lost the fight to Dustin Poirier via submission in the first round.

Later that year, Holloway earned his first UFC victory by defeating Pat Schilling at The Ultimate Fighter: Live Finale. He continued to build momentum with a TKO victory over Justin Lawrence at UFC 150, followed by a win against Leonard Garcia at UFC 155.

In 2013, Holloway suffered back-to-back losses against Dennis Bermudez at UFC 160 and Conor McGregor.

However, Holloway bounced back strongly in 2014, starting with a TKO win over Will Chope at UFC Fight Night 34. He finished the year undefeated and earned his first Performance of the Night bonus after knocking out Akira Corassani at UFC Fight Night 53.

Holloway went on an incredible winning streak from 2014 to 2018, setting the longest winning streak in the UFC featherweight division with 13 victories.

In late 2016, he defeated Anthony Pettis to win the interim UFC Featherweight Championship. He later unified the title in 2017 by defeating José Aldo at UFC 212.

Holloway successfully defended the featherweight title multiple times, including victories over Aldo in a rematch and Brian Ortega at UFC 231. In the Ortega fight, Holloway set a UFC record with 290 significant strikes landed in a single bout.

    Later Career and BMF Title

In 2019, Holloway moved up to lightweight to face Dustin Poirier for the interim lightweight championship at UFC 236, but he lost by unanimous decision.

Returning to featherweight, he defended his title once more by defeating Frankie Edgar at UFC 240. However, he later lost the championship to Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 245.

One of Holloway’s most memorable performances came in 2021 when he defeated Calvin Kattar at UFC on ABC 1, breaking his own record by landing 445 significant strikes in a single fight.

In 2024, Holloway captured the UFC “BMF” title by defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 300, further cementing his legacy as one of the sport’s most exciting fighters.

    Personal Life

In 2012, Holloway married his longtime girlfriend Kaimana Pa’aluhi. The couple welcomed a son named Rush before separating in 2014 and later divorcing in 2017.

Holloway later began a relationship with professional surfer Alessa Quizon. The couple married in 2022.
