Police in Meru County are investigating the fatal shooting of a 31-year-old man who was injured during a political rally in Buuri West Sub-county.
Police said Eric Mwenda, was shot in the forehead on March 8 at around 3:30 p.m. at Ntirimiti Centre during a fracas that reportedly erupted at a stopover rally organised by the United Opposition.
The victim was rushed to St Teresa’s Kiirua Mission Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.
However, on the morning of March 9 at around 5:00 a.m., the family received a call from a neurosurgeon at the hospital confirming that Mwenda had succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Police visited both the scene of the alleged shooting and the hospital and confirmed that the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the forehead.
Investigators recovered a spent 9mm cartridge at the scene.
Police say the area has since been secured and investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify the person responsible.
And police in Makueni County are investigating a drowning incident after the body of a man who had been reported missing was discovered in a river in Mbooni West Sub-county.
Police said Joseph Mutuku Kioko, aged 36, had gone missing on March 7 while returning home from his workplace at the home of Charles Nzonzo.
Two days later, on the morning of March 9, the body of the deceased was discovered stuck along the banks of the Siuni River in Kamua Iiani sub-location within Tulimani Location.
Relatives who arrived at the scene positively identified the body as that of Joseph Mutuku Kioko.
Police officers from the National Police Service visited the scene and supervised the retrieval of the body from the river.
The remains are expected to be moved to a mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
