    Early Life

Tommy DeCarlo was born on April 23, 1965. Growing up, he was a devoted fan of classic rock, particularly Boston, whose melodic sound and soaring vocals left a lasting impression on him. Before embarking on a professional music career, DeCarlo lived a relatively ordinary life in North Carolina, working as a credit manager at a Home Depot store. Music remained a personal passion, and he gained a reputation among friends and family for his uncanny ability to replicate the voice of Boston’s original lead singer, Brad Delp.

    The Unexpected Break

DeCarlo’s life changed in 2007 after the death of Brad Delp. As a tribute, he recorded himself performing several Boston songs and posted them online. Encouraged by his daughter, he sent the demos to Boston’s management. The recordings eventually reached Tom Scholz, who was impressed by DeCarlo’s voice and invited him to audition.

The audition led to DeCarlo becoming Boston’s new touring lead singer, stepping into one of the most recognizable roles in classic rock.

    Touring with Boston

From 2007 onward, DeCarlo became Boston’s primary live vocalist. He performed the band’s classic hits, including:

    • “More Than a Feeling”
    • “Peace of Mind”
    • “Amanda”

His vocal tone closely matched Brad Delp’s, maintaining the band’s signature sound. Over the years, he toured extensively across North America and internationally, becoming the voice most associated with Boston’s live performances during his tenure.

    Recording

DeCarlo also contributed to Boston’s 2013 album, “Life, Love & Hope”, singing lead vocals on several tracks.

He collaborated with his son in the band DECARLO, releasing the album “Lightning Strikes Twice”, which allowed him to explore music beyond Boston’s catalog.

In 2021, he published an audiobook memoir, “Unlikely Rockstar—The Tommy DeCarlo Story,” detailing his journey from retail worker and Boston superfan to lead vocalist. The memoir resonated with fans as a story of persistence and unexpected opportunity.

    Illness and Death

In September 2025, DeCarlo was diagnosed with brain cancer. He battled the illness for six months, during which his family set up a fundraiser to assist with medical expenses. Tommy DeCarlo passed away on March 9, 2026, at the age of 60. His family noted that he faced the disease with courage and determination until the end.
