Joe Jackson was an American music manager and talent promoter who had an estimated net worth of $500,000 at the time of his death in 2018. He is best known as the patriarch of the famous Jackson family, one of the most influential families in entertainment history.

A former boxer and steelworker in Gary, Indiana, Joe Jackson recognized the musical talents of his children early and transformed them into global stars. Under his management, his sons formed The Jackson 5, which became one of the most successful pop groups of the late 1960s and 1970s.

With hits such as I Want You Back, ABC, and I’ll Be There, the group achieved worldwide fame after signing with Motown. Joe’s strict discipline and determination played a major role in their success, although his parenting and management style was often criticized as overly harsh.

    Early Life

Joe Jackson was born Joseph Walter Jackson on July 26, 1928, in Fountain Hill, Arkansas, to Crystal Lee Jackson and Samuel Joseph Jackson, a schoolteacher. He was the oldest of five children.

Joe’s childhood was difficult. His parents separated when he was 12 years old, after which his mother moved with the younger children to East Chicago, Indiana, while Joe relocated with his father to Oakland, California. The separation left him largely independent from an early age.

Later, he returned to East Chicago, where he eventually dropped out of high school and began searching for work.

    Family

In Indiana, Joe Jackson worked at Inland Steel Company and later took other jobs to support himself. During this time, he also pursued boxing, competing in the Golden Gloves amateur circuit and considering a professional career.

He met Katherine Jackson (born Katherine Scruse) while she was still a student. The couple married in November 1949 and settled in Gary, Indiana, raising a large family together.

Joe and Katherine had ten children, including:

    • Rebbie Jackson
    • Jackie Jackson
    • Tito Jackson
    • Jermaine Jackson
    • La Toya Jackson
    • Marlon Jackson
    • Michael Jackson
    • Randy Jackson
    • Janet Jackson
    • Brandon Jackson, who died shortly after birth

Although Joe worked several jobs—including at American Foundries—he maintained a passion for music and played guitar in a local blues band called The Falcons with his brother Luther Jackson.

    The Jackson 5

In the early 1960s, Joe noticed his sons’ musical abilities and decided to form a family group. Starting with Tito Jackson, Jackie Jackson, and Jermaine Jackson, he created a group called The Jackson Brothers.

Later, Michael Jackson and Marlon Jackson joined the lineup, and the group became The Jackson 5. Joe managed the group with strict discipline, organizing daily rehearsals and local performances at talent shows and clubs.

Their first recording contract came in 1967 with Steeltown Records, where they released the single Big Boy.

The group achieved global success after signing with Motown in 1969. Their debut Motown single I Want You Back reached number one on the charts, followed by more hits such as ABC, The Love You Save, and I’ll Be There.

In 1974, Joe founded Ivory Tower International Records, a record label that managed and promoted additional artists.

    Expanding the Jackson Family Careers

When The Jackson 5 left Motown in 1975 and signed with Epic Records, they began performing under the name The Jacksons.

During this period, Joe expanded his management efforts to other family members. He helped launch the early career of his youngest daughter, Janet Jackson, guiding her toward a recording contract with A&M Records in 1982. Janet later became one of the most successful pop artists in the world.

Meanwhile, his son Michael Jackson achieved unprecedented success as a solo artist, becoming one of the most influential entertainers in history.

    Controversy

Despite his role in building the Jackson family’s success, Joe Jackson’s management style was highly controversial. His strict discipline and demanding rehearsal schedule were later criticized by several of his children.

In the 1990s, Michael Jackson publicly accused his father of physical and emotional abuse, allegations that some siblings supported while others disputed. These claims significantly affected Joe’s public image.

Joe’s personal life also included controversies, including infidelity during his long marriage to Katherine Jackson. One relationship resulted in another daughter, Joh’Vonnie Jackson.

    Later Years and Death

Following the death of Michael Jackson in 2009, Joe was not included in his son’s will, which left his estate primarily to Katherine Jackson and Michael’s children.

Joe Jackson spent much of his later life in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died on June 27, 2018, at the age of 89 after battling Pancreatic Cancer.
