Early Life
Tulisa was born Tula Paulinea Contostavlos on July 13, 1988, in Camden, London, England. She comes from a musical family—her mother Anne is Irish, while her father Plato Contostavlos is of Greek Cypriot descent, and both were involved in music.
Tulisa’s childhood was marked by personal challenges. Her mother struggled with mental health issues and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder, leading to her being hospitalized when Tulisa was just five years old.
With support from her uncle Byron, Tulisa continued her education and attended Quintin Kynaston School at the age of 14. She later studied at Haverstock School, also located in London.
Rise to Fame with N-Dubz
Tulisa’s music career began in the early 2000s when she joined her cousin Dappy and friend Fazer in a hip-hop group originally called Lickle Rinsers Crew. The group performed locally around Camden and gained early exposure through pirate radio stations.
The trio eventually adopted the name N-Dubz and began gaining recognition in the UK music scene. In 2006, they released their debut single You Better Not Waste My Time, followed by other early tracks including I Swear and Feva Las Vegas.
Their debut album Uncle B was released in 2008 and reached number 11 on the UK Albums Chart, eventually earning Platinum certification. The album helped establish N-Dubz as a prominent force in British hip-hop and pop music.
The group continued its success with several more albums, including:
- Against All Odds
- Love.Live.Life
- Timeless
Following a hiatus in 2011 as members pursued solo careers, the trio reunited in 2022 with the single Charmer and later released Timeless in 2023, which topped the UK Hip Hop and R&B Albums Chart.

Solo Music Career
After N-Dubz went on hiatus in 2011, Tulisa began focusing on her solo career. She released her debut album The Female Boss in 2012.
The album was led by the hit single “Young,” which quickly climbed to the top of the UK Singles Chart. Other singles from the album included Live It Up and Sight of You.
Although she began working on a second studio album in 2013, it was never officially released. Tulisa later returned with several standalone singles, including Living Without You, Daddy, Sippin’, and In the Air.
Television Career
Tulisa has also enjoyed a successful career on television. She first appeared as an actress in the Channel 4 series Dubplate Drama, where she played the role of an R&B singer named Laurissa.
She later appeared in documentary programs such as Tulisa: My Mum & Me and Being… N-Dubz, which followed the group’s rise to fame.
Her biggest television role came in 2011 when she joined The X Factor as a judge during its eighth season. She returned for the ninth season in 2012 and later made guest appearances in subsequent seasons.
Tulisa also appeared on other entertainment shows, including Celebrity Juice and Sweat the Small Stuff.
In 2024, she competed in the popular survival reality show I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, where she became the third contestant eliminated during the season.
Film Career
In addition to music and television, Tulisa has appeared in several films. In 2011, she acted in the horror film Demons Never Die, where she played the character Amber Johnson.
That same year, she also appeared in the crime comedy Big Fat Gypsy Gangster, portraying a character named Shanikwa.
Legal Controversy
In 2013, Tulisa was arrested on suspicion of involvement in illegal drug distribution, including cocaine. She was formally charged later that year.
However, during the 2014 trial, the case was dismissed after the judge ruled that the main prosecution witness, investigative journalist Mazher Mahmood, had provided unreliable evidence. Mahmood was later convicted of perverting the course of justice and sentenced to prison.
Personal Life
In 2024, Tulisa publicly revealed that she identifies as demisexual, meaning she experiences sexual attraction only after forming a strong emotional connection. She also shared that she had chosen to remain celibate for several years prior to making the announcement.
