At least 15 people died following a tragic road accident involving a lorry carrying logs and a matatu in Nyeri County.

Police said at least 10 died on the spot while others succumbed to the injuries in hospital.

Witnesses said the crash happened near Kimathi University along Nyeri – Nyahururu road.

Police said the lorry swerved to avoid cyclists, leading to the collision on Saturday evening.
The force of the impact caused severe damage, and several passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Others succumbed.

Emergency services were at the scene managing the aftermath and facilitating the evacuation of the injured.

President William Ruto sent his condolences to the affected families.

“Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences go out to the victims of the road accident that occurred this evening near Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri County.”

“We pray for the swift recovery of those injured. The national government, in conjunction with the county government of Nyeri, is engaging with the affected families and will provide all necessary support during this difficult time,” he said.

Earlier on, police said seven people had died in separate road accidents in the country.

Police said the victims included four pedestrians, two riders and a pedal cyclist.

The accidents left at least 14 people with serious injuries, police said adding they were rushed to various hospitals.

Fatal accidents have been on the rise amid efforts to address the trend.
