    Siblings

Jake’s older brothers, Ryan and Gabe, both pursued competitive hockey careers at the collegiate level and beyond, which greatly influenced Jake’s development as he constantly tried to keep up with them during childhood backyard and street games.

Ryan Guentzel, the eldest, played college hockey at Notre Dame and later competed professionally.

Gabe Guentzel, the middle brother, played in the North American Hockey League and USHL before enjoying a four-year NCAA career at Colorado College.

    Career

Guentzel’s journey to the NHL began with standout performances in high school at Hill-Murray School in Minnesota, followed by a dominant junior season in the USHL with the Sioux City Musketeers, where he earned Rookie of the Year honors.

He then committed to the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO), where he quickly became one of the team’s leading scorers over three seasons, helping the Mavericks reach the Frozen Four in 2015.

Selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round (77th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Guentzel signed his entry-level contract in 2016 and made an immediate impact.

He debuted with the Penguins that season and exploded in the 2017 playoffs as a rookie, leading all scorers with 13 goals and tying a record with 21 points while helping Pittsburgh win the Stanley Cup.

After several successful seasons with the Penguins, including multiple 30-plus goal campaigns and an All-Star selection, Guentzel was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes at the 2024 deadline.

He later signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent in the summer of 2024 on a seven-year, $63 million contract.

In Tampa Bay, he has continued his productive ways, posting strong goal and point totals while adapting to new linemates.

Internationally, Guentzel has represented the United States, most notably winning a gold medal with Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, contributing to the country’s first men’s Olympic hockey gold since 1980.

    Accolades

In junior hockey, he was named USHL Rookie of the Year, and at the collegiate level, he received NCHC honors including Second All-Star Team selection.
