A public service vehicle (PSV) bus was on Saturday morning completely destroyed by fire along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway near Ikoya Trading Centre in Makindu Sub-county, Makueni County.

The incident occurred at around 5:00 a.m. on May 2, 2026, involving a Mercedes-Benz bus, belonging to Nurein Company and operating on the Mombasa–Nairobi route.

According to the driver, he noticed flames emerging from the rear left tyres through his side mirror while en route to Nairobi.

He immediately pulled over to the roadside and alerted the conductor and passengers.

All passengers safely alighted from the bus and managed to salvage their belongings before the fire spread.

Attempts to put out the fire were unsuccessful as it quickly intensified, engulfing the entire vehicle and reducing it to a shell.

    No injuries were reported.

Police officers from Makindu Police Station visited the scene, and the remains of the bus are still at the location awaiting towing as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.

Meanwhile, police in Bungoma South Sub-county are investigating an electrocution incident that claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy in Namirembe Location.

The incident was reported at around 5:00 p.m. on May 2, 2026, but is said to have occurred earlier at about 1:00 p.m. in Nambalai Village, approximately six kilometres south of Ndengelwa Police Patrol Base.

The deceased, identified as Nelson Barasa Wafula, a Grade 7 pupil at Ekitale Primary School, was reportedly heading home after fetching water when he stepped on a live wire.

Preliminary investigations established that the wire had been illegally connected from the home of a woman identified as Antoninah Namukhana to a neighbouring homestead belonging to Isaac Wambiliaga, where burial preparations were underway.

Police believe the illegal electricity connection had been set up on April 30, 2026, to support activities related to the burial.

The scene was processed and documented by crime scene investigators before the body was moved to Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

Authorities have launched investigations into the illegal power connection, which is believed to have led to the fatal incident.
