Police in Bungoma County launched investigations into the theft of two firearms and ammunition from an armoury at Sang’alo Tree Nursery Camp in what detectives suspect could be an inside job.

According to police, the incident was detected on Sunday morning.

It was discovered at around 8:50am when forest rangers returned their weapons to the armoury after completing night duties.

The officers reportedly found the armoury open and two firearms missing. The stolen weapons were identified as a Duma pistol and an SH&E firearm together with an empty magazine.

A total of 125 rounds of 9mm calibre ammunition had also been stolen.

However, during a search around the camp, security officers recovered 115 rounds of ammunition about 50 metres from the camp gate, leaving only 10 rounds still unaccounted for.

Senior security and government officials visited the scene as CSI officers documented and processed it as part of the probe.

Preliminary findings point to a possible inside job after investigators established there were no signs of forced entry.

Police noted that all doors, including two padlocks securing the steel weapons box, had been opened without damage.

Investigators are also focusing on five forest rangers who permanently reside in the office that doubles up as residential quarters at the camp.

Authorities said efforts to recover the missing firearms and ammunition are ongoing.

There are fears the weapons may be used elsewhere to commit a crime.

Police said they had mounted an investigation into the incident hoping to make recoveries.

The personnel who were present were grilled as part of the probe into the incident.

They all denied knowledge of the same. More personnel were sent to the area to pursue the matter, officials said on Monday amid plans to transfer some of the forest rangers from the camp.
