    Siblings

Marc-André comes from a family where football played an important role in his early development, particularly through his older brother Jean-Marcel ter Stegen.

Jean-Marcel, who is about six years older, often trained with him in their parents’ garage during childhood, with Jean-Marcel playing as goalkeeper while young Marc-André took shots.

Their mother, Renate, and their grandfather became central figures in his upbringing and support system, with his grandfather frequently taking him to training sessions.

    Career

Ter Stegen began his youth career with hometown club Borussia Mönchengladbach, progressing through the ranks and making his first-team debut in the Bundesliga.

He quickly established himself as a reliable starter, earning recognition as one of the league’s promising young goalkeepers.

In 2014, FC Barcelona signed him for around €12 million as a long-term successor to Víctor Valdés.

At Barcelona, he initially shared goalkeeping duties before becoming the undisputed number one.

He played a key role in the club’s successes, contributing with his ability to start attacks from the back.

Over the years, he has dealt with injuries but maintained high performance levels.

In January 2026, he moved to Girona on loan from Barcelona to gain regular playing time amid competition for the starting spot.

Internationally, ter Stegen has represented Germany at various youth levels, winning the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2009.

He has been part of senior squads for major tournaments, including UEFA Euro 2016, the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup (which Germany won), the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, and UEFA Euro 2024.

    Accolades

With Barcelona, Ter Stegen has won multiple La Liga titles, several Copa del Rey trophies, Spanish Super Cups, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

He also contributed to Germany’s 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup victory.

Individually, he has been named in various team-of-the-year selections and received recognition as one of La Liga’s standout performers.
