Kevin Rose is an American internet entrepreneur, investor, and media personality who has a net worth of approximately $100 million. Rose built his fortune through a series of influential early internet companies, including the social news platform Digg and the microblogging service Pownce, as well as his later success as a venture capitalist and startup founder. Over the years, he has also become a notable early-stage investor in several major tech companies, further strengthening his position in Silicon Valley.

Rose first gained widespread attention as the co-founder of Digg, one of the earliest user-driven social news aggregation sites. The platform allowed users to “digg” or upvote content, helping surface the most popular stories on the internet. At its peak, Digg was one of the most influential social platforms on the web before a controversial redesign in 2010 led to a major user exodus and the eventual departure of Rose from the company.

Beyond Digg, Rose co-founded several other startups, including Revision3, a pioneering internet television network, and Pownce, a short-lived social networking and messaging platform. He also created Milk, a mobile app startup that produced experimental consumer products before being shut down.

As an investor, Rose has backed early-stage companies such as Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, OMGPOP, Dailybooth, and Formspring, cementing his reputation as a strong early internet investor with a sharp eye for breakout startups. He later joined Google Ventures (GV) as a venture partner, where he continued to invest in emerging technology companies.

In recent years, Rose has shifted his focus toward crypto and Web3 ventures. He co-founded Proof Collective, a membership-based NFT community, and helped launch the Moonbirds NFT collection, which generated significant early demand in the digital collectibles market.

    Early Life

Kevin Rose was born on February 21, 1977, in Redding, California, and later grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. He developed an early interest in computers and technology, eventually becoming an Eagle Scout during his youth.

He attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he studied computer science, but left college before completing his degree to pursue opportunities in the tech industry. Even before dropping out, Rose was already working in programming roles, including positions connected to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Nevada Test Site.

    The Screen Savers

Rose’s early media career took off in 2004 when he joined TechTV’s popular technology show “The Screen Savers.” Initially hired as a production assistant, he quickly rose to become a co-host during the program’s later years. The show helped him build valuable connections in Silicon Valley and gain early exposure as a tech personality.

    Digg

In 2004, Kevin Rose co-founded Digg, a revolutionary social news platform that allowed users to submit and vote on content from across the web. The most popular stories rose to the front page, creating a community-driven alternative to traditional news aggregation.

Digg quickly became one of the defining web platforms of the Web 2.0 era. However, after a major redesign in 2010, the platform lost much of its user base, and Rose eventually stepped away from the company. In 2012, Digg’s remaining assets were sold to Betaworks for approximately $500,000 plus equity.

    Other Business Ventures

Rose has co-founded and built multiple internet startups throughout his career, including:

    • Revision3 – A digital media network focused on online video content
    • Pownce – A short-lived social networking and messaging platform
    • Milk / Oink – A mobile app lab focused on experimental consumer tools
    • Watchville – A watch news aggregation platform later merged with HODINKEE

He also continued working in venture capital and startup development, including roles at Google Ventures (GV) and later True Ventures.

    Podcasts

Rose became a prominent voice in tech media through podcasting. He launched “TheBroken” in 2003 and later co-hosted the popular “Diggnation” podcast with Alex Albrecht from 2005 to 2011, where they discussed trending internet stories in a casual, entertainment-driven format.

He also co-hosts “The Random Show” with entrepreneur Tim Ferriss, which focuses on business, lifestyle, and productivity topics.

    Personal Life and Real Estate

Kevin Rose married Darya Pino in 2013. The couple drew public attention after purchasing and later demolishing a historic home in Portland, Oregon, a decision that sparked local controversy.

In 2014, Rose built a 6,665-square-foot modern mansion in Portland on a 1.24-acre property. He later listed the home for approximately $7.998 million in 2022, selling it near asking price later that year.

    NFT and Web3 Ventures

More recently, Rose co-founded Proof Collective, an NFT-focused membership community, and helped launch Moonbirds, a collection of 10,000 owl NFTs that generated significant early revenue and attention in the crypto space.
