    Early Life

Vince Clarke was born Vincent John Martin on July 3, 1960, in East London, England.

He later moved with his family to Basildon, Essex, where he developed an interest in music during his school years.

Inspired by the growing electronic music movement, Clarke began performing in local bands before launching a career that would make him one of Britain’s most influential songwriters.

    Early Bands

During the late 1970s, Clarke formed the short-lived band No Romance in China with school friend Andy Fletcher.

He also played guitar in another local group called The Plan, continuing to refine his songwriting and musicianship before finding mainstream success.

    Depeche Mode

In 1980, Clarke and Andy Fletcher formed a band originally known as Composition of Sound.

After Martin Gore and David Gahan joined, the group became Depeche Mode.

The band’s debut album, Speak & Spell (1981), featured several songs written by Clarke, including:

    • Dreaming of Me
    • New Life
    • Just Can’t Get Enough

Despite the album’s success, Clarke left Depeche Mode soon after its release, paving the way for the next stage of his career.

    Yazoo

After leaving Depeche Mode, Clarke answered an advertisement placed by singer Alison Moyet in Melody Maker magazine.

The pair formed Yazoo, one of the defining synth-pop acts of the early 1980s.

Their debut album, Upstairs at Eric’s, produced major hits including:

    • Only You
    • Don’t Go

The duo followed with You and Me Both, which topped the UK Albums Chart before Yazoo split in 1983.

In 2008, Clarke and Moyet reunited for a successful anniversary tour celebrating the band’s legacy.

    The Assembly

Following Yazoo’s breakup, Clarke teamed up with sound engineer Eric Radcliffe to form The Assembly.

The project experimented with using different guest vocalists for each release and produced the UK hit Never Never before ending after a short run.

    Erasure

In 1985, Clarke placed another advertisement in Melody Maker looking for a vocalist.

He discovered Andy Bell, and together they formed Erasure.

Although their debut album Wonderland achieved modest success, the duo broke through internationally with The Circus in 1987.

Their popularity continued to grow with the release of The Innocents, which featured some of their best-known songs, including:

    • Ship of Fools
    • Chains of Love
    • A Little Respect

Erasure went on to release a string of successful albums, including:

    • Wild!
    • Chorus
    • I Say I Say I Say

The duo also enjoyed a chart-topping success with the Abba-esque EP and later hits such as Always, Blue Savannah, and Run to the Sun.

Over their career, Erasure has released more than 200 songs and sold over 28 million albums worldwide.

    Other Music Projects

Beyond his work with Erasure, Clarke has participated in numerous musical collaborations.

He has worked with artists including:

    • Jean-Michel Jarre
    • Paul Hartnoll
    • Freeform Five

In 2011, Clarke reunited musically with former Depeche Mode bandmate Martin Gore to form VCMG, releasing several EPs and the album Ssss.

He has also released solo projects, including:

    • Deeptronica (2009)
    • Songs of Silence (2023)

    Personal Life

Vince Clarke was married to entertainment publicist and producer Tracy Hurley Martin.

The couple had one son, Oscar.

Tragically, Tracy Hurley Martin passed away from cancer in early 2024.
