Luke Jacobson Siblings: All About Kane and Mitch Jacobson

Luke Brittain Jacobson is a New Zealand rugby union player born on 20 April 1997 in Te Awamutu and raised in nearby Cambridge in the Waikato region.

He plays primarily as a flanker or number eight in the loose forward positions.

A product of Cambridge High School and the Hautapu club, he is known for his powerful ball carries, relentless defence, work rate, versatility, and leadership.

He has represented the Chiefs in Super Rugby Pacific and the All Blacks at international level, becoming All Black number 1183.

Siblings

Luke is the youngest of three brothers, all of whom were born at Matariki Hospital in Te Awamutu and pursued careers as loose forwards.

His eldest brother, Kane Jacobson, represented New Zealand Schools and progressed through the Chiefs development pathway before featuring for North Harbour and later Northland in provincial rugby.

Middle brother Mitch Jacobson, born in 1996, has enjoyed a longer professional career that includes extensive appearances for Waikato, limited Super Rugby outings with the Chiefs, a stint with the Sunwolves in Japan, and success in Major League Rugby with the New England Free Jacks, including a championship win.

Luke and Mitch frequently played together through the junior ranks, for Waikato, and at times for the Chiefs, while the three brothers share a strong rugby-oriented family background that shaped their development in the sport.

Career

Jacobson’s pathway began with selection for the New Zealand Schools team in 2014.

He represented the New Zealand Under-20 side in 2016 and captained it to the World Rugby Under-20 Championship title in Georgia in 2017.

That same year he debuted for Waikato in provincial rugby and went on to captain the side in the National Provincial Championship.

He made his Super Rugby debut for the Chiefs in 2018 and quickly established himself as a regular, known for his physicality and consistency.

His All Blacks debut came in July 2019 against Argentina in Buenos Aires.

Named in the 2019 Rugby World Cup squad, he withdrew due to delayed concussion symptoms and did not play in the tournament.

After missing the 2020 international season through injury, he returned in 2021 and became a valued member of the national loose forward group.

He featured in the 2023 Rugby World Cup squad in France.

Jacobson has captained the Chiefs since 2024, leading the side through successive finals campaigns, and re-signed with the franchise and New Zealand Rugby through to 2027.

He has accumulated substantial Super Rugby appearances, reaching the milestone of 100 games for the Chiefs, alongside more than two dozen Test caps for the All Blacks in which he has scored multiple tries.

Accolades

As captain of the New Zealand Under-20 team, Jacobson led the side to the 2017 World Rugby Under-20 Championship title.

Earlier he captained Waikato at the Jock Hobbs Memorial Under-19 Tournament and earned Player of the Tournament honours.

He has been selected for multiple All Blacks squads, including the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cups, and holds the distinction of All Black number 1183.

At Super Rugby level he has captained the Chiefs to repeated finals appearances and runners-up finishes in recent seasons, while contributing to the side’s consistent competitiveness.
