Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration Raymond Omollo has issued an update on the ongoing Kihunguro Footbridge Project along the Thika Superhighway, describing the infrastructure as a key investment in pedestrian safety and traffic management.
The project, being implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), seeks to address long-standing safety challenges at Kihunguro in Ruiru, where pedestrians routinely cross the busy highway at street level.
The area has been identified as a dangerous section of the Thika Superhighway due to the high volume of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
The PS said the modern overhead footbridge is expected to replace the existing street-level zebra crossing, which has contributed to pedestrian-vehicle conflicts and traffic disruptions along the busy corridor.
Once completed, the footbridge will provide pedestrians with a safer means of crossing the highway while allowing motorists to maintain a smoother and uninterrupted flow of traffic.
The facility has been designed with accessibility in mind. It will feature a conventional staircase on one side and a gentle access ramp on the other, enabling persons with disabilities, wheelchair users and people transporting goods to use the bridge more conveniently.
The project is also expected to reduce pedestrian-related accidents by providing a designated crossing point away from moving traffic.
According to the Interior ministry, improved pedestrian infrastructure is critical to enhancing public safety, particularly in areas experiencing rapid population growth and increased traffic.
The Kihunguro Footbridge is expected to complement wider government efforts to improve road safety and mobility along the Thika Superhighway, which serves large numbers of commuters travelling between Nairobi, Ruiru, Thika and surrounding areas.
“The project also complements the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration’s commitment to protecting lives through safer public infrastructure, recognising that improved road safety and efficient transport networks are essential to public security, orderly mobility and sustainable socio-economic development,” Omollo said.
