A 40-year-old construction worker drowned in a borehole in Kitui Central Sub-County on Tuesday evening.

The deceased, identified as Muia Mutinda, was working at a construction site owned by a man who resides in Nairobi, when the incident occurred.

The incident was reported to Kitui Police Station at about 5.40pm on August 11, 2026.

Police officers, including a scene-of-crime officer, visited the site and confirmed the incident. They sought assistance from the county fire brigade, whose team used equipment to retrieve Mutinda’s body from the borehole.

The scene was processed by police before the body was moved to the Kitui County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

A 27-year-old man was found dead in River Gucha in Rongo Sub-County, Migori County, on Tuesday evening.

The body of John Terry was spotted floating along the river in West Kanyamwamba Sub-Location and was retrieved from the water by members of the public.

Police officers who visited the scene found the deceased’s body with no visible physical injuries.

The body was moved to Rosewood Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.

Meanwhile, a remandee facing a rape charge escaped from custody at Shanzu Law Court in Kilifi South Sub-County on Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect, identified as Levison Mwachai, reportedly escaped at about 2.50pm while seven remandees were being held at the court cells awaiting committal to Shimo La Tewa Prison.

According to police, Mwachai asked a court orderly for permission to answer a call of nature. The officer opened the cell and allowed him to use a toilet located next to the cells.

The officer was reportedly issuing an invoice to another remandee when he turned around and realised Mwachai had disappeared.

A search was immediately launched within the court premises but the suspect could not be traced.

Mwachai was being held over an alleged rape offence under Section 3(1)(a), (c) and (3) of the Sexual Offences Act No. 3 of 2006, in connection with a case reported at Ndonyo Police Station.

Police have launched efforts to trace and rearrest the escaped suspect.
