A 70-year-old man was shot dead by a masked gunman who raided his home in Viambani Village, Ganze Sub-County, Kilifi County, on Tuesday night.

The deceased, Malingi Kiwayi Weru Kauma, was attacked at about 9.30pm by a lone assailant who arrived on an unidentified motorcycle and was armed with a suspected short firearm.

According to police, the attacker first asked the deceased’s relative to identify the man before pointing the firearm at him and shooting him once in the mouth.

The bullet reportedly passed through the oral cavity and exited through the right side of the neck. The attacker then fled the scene on the motorcycle.

Police said the deceased was involved in land-sale dealings in Ganze and Kauma sub-counties, although his exact motive for the killing had not been established.

The body was later moved to Kilifi County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination.

Police did not recover a spent cartridge at the scene, citing darkness, and said a further scene visit would be conducted as investigations into the killing continue.

Meanwhile, police are investigating an incident where an un unidentified man believed to be about 40 years old was found dead in Mucheene Forest in Buuri East Sub-County, Meru County, on Tuesday evening.

Police said the body was discovered by personnel from the Mt Kenya Conservancy Trust who were on patrol in the forest within Kibiricha Location.

The officers found the body of an unidentified African male adult lying on his back on the ground. Police said there were no visible physical injuries, although the man’s head, face and eyes had partial ant bites.

The scene was processed and documented before the body was moved to Meru Level V Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination and identification.

Police have launched investigations to establish the man’s identity and circumstances surrounding his death.
