Police re-arrest lawyer Angela Mulwa over murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso

A Nairobi lawyer was on Thursday evening re-arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide detectives hours after securing her release on a Sh1 million bond in the murder of her step-mother.

Detectives arrested lawyer Angela Mulwa for what they termed as processing and possible arraignment for the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso.

Dr Mutiso was a step mother to Angela. Angela’s mother Rose Mbithe and brother Chris are also in custody over the murder of Dr Mutiso on July 29.

Their father Prof David Ndetei had married Dr Mutiso as the second wife after the couple divorced, marking a turning point in the fight over family property.

Police said Angela is now set to be arraigned on Friday in connection with the murder of Dr. Mutiso.

Her re-arrest came shortly after she was released on bond alongside Nelson Masiga in the case involving the alleged theft of a Range Rover from a disputed 21-acre parcel of land in Mlolongo, which has been linked to Dr. Mutiso’s murder probe.

Masiga is a former Member of Nairobi County Assembly and was acting as a broker in the planned sale of the car. The car was among four that had been stolen from the farm in February 2026 when a mob raided there and demolished property.

Mavoko Senior Resident Magistrate Lilian Kwamboka had declined an application by the prosecution to detain Mulwa and Masiga for a further seven days to allow investigators to complete their investigations.

Angela and Masiga were arrested on August 2 after the Range Rover was recovered at one of Mulwa’s properties in Karen.

They had subsequently been held for 14 days.

The lawyer through her lawyer Danstan Omari later applied to have her bond terms reviewed to allow her to secure her release on cash bail, arguing that members of her immediate family were also in police custody in connection with the murder investigation and were therefore unable to assist in processing the bond.

The prosecution had opposed the application, citing, among other issues, the value of the disputed property.

While releasing the suspects, Magistrate Kwamboka directed that each pay a bond of Sh1 million with a surety of a similar amount and surrender their passports and other travel documents with the court.

Dr. Mutiso was shot dead on July 29 during her morning commute in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area after the cab she was travelling in was reportedly blocked by a black Toyota Prado at the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road.

Gunmen on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire on the vehicle, fatally injuring her. She was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police are holding at least six suspects in connection with the murder. They include a police officer, a bodaboda rider and a man who was said to have been the main link in organizing the murder.

A pistol that was used in the attack, a motorcycle and car were recovered in ongoing operations.

Police have linked the murder to a longstanding land dispute in Mlolongo area.
