A 47-year-old man has been arrested in Kibra, Nairobi, after his nine-year-old daughter died following an alleged sexual assault and brutal physical attack.

The suspect, identified as Norman Swahili, is in police custody as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the child.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the incident occurred on Sunday, September 6, 2026, after officers at Kibra Police Station received a distress call reporting that a man had seriously assaulted his daughter.

Police officers, accompanied by members of the community policing team, immediately rushed to the reported scene.

However, upon arrival, the officers were informed that the suspect had already taken the critically injured child to Mbagathi Hospital in an attempt to seek medical attention.

The officers proceeded to the hospital, where they received the devastating news that the nine-year-old girl had been pronounced dead on arrival.

A preliminary examination of the child’s body revealed multiple bruises and swellings across different parts of her body.

Police also noted that the child had lost an upper incisor tooth, with the injuries pointing to the severity of the alleged assault.

Further examination indicated that the girl had also been sexually assaulted.

The circumstances surrounding the injuries and the alleged sexual assault remain under investigation.

Following her death, the child’s body was moved to Nairobi Funeral Home, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

The autopsy is expected to help establish the exact cause and circumstances of the child’s death.

Meanwhile, the suspect remains in police custody as detectives process the case ahead of his arraignment in court.

The DCI condemned the alleged attack and urged members of the public to protect children from all forms of violence and abuse.

“The DCI extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and stands with them in this moment of profound grief,” the agency said.

The DCI warned that violence, defilement and other forms of abuse against children are serious offences.

“The public is strongly cautioned against all forms of violence, defilement and abuse, particularly against children. Such acts are a grave violation of the law and a betrayal of the trust and protection every child deserves,” the agency added.

The DCI said it would continue pursuing suspects involved in crimes against children and take lawful action against those found culpable.

“The DCI will continue to pursue perpetrators of such heinous crimes, and stern lawful action will be taken against anyone found culpable,” the agency said.
