Yan Diomande is an Ivorian professional footballer born on 14 November 2006 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

He operates primarily as a versatile winger capable of playing on either flank, known for his explosive pace, dribbling ability, physicality, and goal threat.

He currently plays for La Liga club Real Madrid and represents the Ivory Coast national team.

Diomande grew up in modest circumstances in the Sicogi neighbourhood of Yopougon in Abidjan, in a large extended family household.

As a child he idolised Cristiano Ronaldo, once writing the Portuguese star’s name and number 7 on a fake Manchester United shirt with a black marker.

At age 15 he moved alone to the United States to pursue football opportunities, speaking only French at the time and adapting to a new culture and lifestyle.

    Siblings

Yan has one sibling, his younger sister Roxane.

He grew up surrounded by many cousins who functioned like brothers and sisters in a crowded family home where as many as 25 people sometimes slept under one roof.

Roxane was his closest companion and strongest supporter from childhood.

She shared in his early dreams of football success, encouraged him through repeated rejections by European clubs, and insisted he could become better than even the greatest players.

In early 2025, shortly after Diomande made his professional debut, Roxane died at the age of 15 after her drink was spiked at a party in Ivory Coast.

    Career

After early experiences in Ivory Coast, Diomande joined the DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 2022.

There he also featured for affiliate side AS Frenzi, helping the team win the UPSL Premier Division title in 2023 and earning individual recognition including STARI Player of the Year.

He undertook trials with several European clubs including Rangers, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Olympiacos, but none resulted in a contract at the time.

In January 2025 he signed for Spanish side CD Leganés.

After a short spell with the reserves he made his first-team and La Liga debut as a late substitute against Real Madrid on 29 March 2025.

He scored his first professional goal the following month against Espanyol.

His performances attracted attention, and in July 2025 RB Leipzig paid a reported €20 million release clause to secure him on a multi-year deal.

In his debut Bundesliga season he scored 12 league goals and provided multiple assists, establishing himself as a key attacking threat with exceptional dribbling numbers.

He also contributed in cup competitions.

In August 2026 Real Madrid signed him from Leipzig for a reported base fee of €125 million plus up to €15 million in add-ons on a contract until 2033, making the transfer one of the highest in the club’s history and the most expensive involving an African player at the time.

He made his Real Madrid debut as a substitute in August 2026.

Internationally, Diomande represented Ivory Coast at under-17 and under-23 levels before earning his senior debut in 2025, scoring on his first appearance.

He featured in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and was selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he started in the opening match and helped the team reach the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.

    Accolades

During his time at DME Academy and AS Frenzi, Diomande was named 2023 STARI Player of the Year and contributed to a league title while earning tournament MVP recognition.

In the 2025–26 Bundesliga season with RB Leipzig he was named Rookie of the Month on more than one occasion, Player of the Month in April 2026, and ultimately Bundesliga Rookie (or Best Young Player) of the Season.

He became one of the youngest players to score a hat-trick in the Bundesliga and reached ten league goals at a notably young age.

For Ivory Coast he was named man of the match on his World Cup debut against Ecuador in 2026 and became the youngest player to appear for the country at a World Cup finals.

He also recorded an assist in the tournament that made him the youngest Ivorian to achieve that feat at the competition.
