Kajol Mukherjee was born to a Marathi Brahmin father, Shomu Mukherjee, a renowned film director and producer, and a Bengali Christian mother, Tanuja, a celebrated actress in her own right.

This rich cultural heritage gave Kajol a unique, earthy charm that translated beautifully onto the silver screen.

She made her acting debut at the tender age of seventeen with Bekhudi in 1992, but it was her breakout role in Baazigar (1993) opposite Shah Rukh Khan that announced the arrival of a powerhouse.

Over the years, Kajol evolved from the spirited, rebellious teenager to one of the most versatile actresses in Hindi cinema, known for her fearless choices and her refusal to conform to the typical “heroine” mold.

She is the niece of the legendary actress Nutan and the cousin of actress Rani Mukerji, making her lineage a veritable who’s who of Bollywood royalty.

    Siblings

Kajol has one sibling, a younger sister named Tanishaa Mukerji, who was born on March 3, 1978.

Where Kajol is often perceived as boisterous, spontaneous, and fiercely outspoken, Tanishaa is generally regarded as the quieter and reserved sibling.

Tanishaa, like her elder sister and mother, ventured into the world of acting.

She made her Bollywood debut in 2003 with the film Sssshhh…, and subsequently appeared in films like Popcorn Khao! Mast Ho Jao and Neal ‘n’ Nikki.

Kajol has been vocal in her support for Tanishaa, often defending her against media scrutiny and industrial criticism.

    Career

Kajol is arguably one of the few actresses who successfully transitioned from the quintessential romantic heroine to complex character-driven roles without losing her box-office appeal.

Her partnership with Shah Rukh Khan is legendary, producing iconic films that define Bollywood’s romantic era.

From the obsessive love in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) to the heartbreaking tragedy of Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and the mature chemistry in My Name Is Khan (2010), their on-screen pairing remains untouched by time.

However, Kajol refused to be pigeonholed as just a romantic lead.

She took on the challenging role of a jealous, obsessive wife in Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997), a performance that proved she could carry a thriller on her shoulders.

She delivered a powerhouse performance in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), playing the tomboyish Anjali, a role that won her immense critical acclaim.

In the 2000s, she further solidified her legacy with films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001) and the intense psychological drama Fanaa (2006), where she played a blind Kashmiri girl caught in a web of terrorism and love.

After a brief hiatus to focus on her family, she returned with a vengeance, starring in the critically acclaimed Dilwale (2015) and the gritty, dark comedy Tribhanga (2021) for Netflix, proving that her talent only deepens with age.

Her recent work in Salaam Venky (2022) once again showcased her ability to bring profound emotional depth to heartbreaking narratives.

    Accolades

Devgan has won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress a record six times, tying with her late aunt, Nutan.

Her victories span decades, winning for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001), and Fanaa (2006), among others.

In 2010, she was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, by the Government of India, recognizing her contribution to the arts.

Her performances have consistently garnered critical praise, not just for her dialogue delivery but for her incredible physicality and the way she uses her eyes to convey a spectrum of emotions.

Beyond the trophies, Kajol’s greatest accolade is her enduring relevance.

In an industry notoriously cruel to actresses as they age, Kajol has navigated her career with unmatched grace.

She has chosen roles that challenge societal norms and showcase the strength of women at every stage of life.

With her sister Tanishaa by her side and her family as her bedrock, Kajol Devgan stands tall as a symbol of resilience, talent, and unwavering authenticity.
