The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) official over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe to facilitate the irregular clearance of tax arrears and issuance of a Tax Compliance Certificate.

EACC said in a statement on Tuesday that the suspect, Hughes Obilo, is an officer attached to the Debt Refunds Department in Kisumu.

According to the anti-corruption agency, Obilo allegedly demanded Sh100,000 from a construction company to facilitate the clearance of outstanding tax arrears amounting to Sh4.5 million from the iTax system.

EACC said preliminary investigations were conducted after receiving information concerning the alleged bribery.

The Commission subsequently mounted an operation that resulted in the arrest of the KRA official while he was allegedly receiving Sh30,000.

The suspect was arrested in Kisumu on September 14, 2026.

Following his arrest, Obilo was booked at Kisumu Central Police Station, where he was being processed and recording a statement.

EACC said the operation was part of its efforts to address corruption at public service delivery points and hold public officials accountable for alleged abuse of office.

The Commission warned that it would continue taking action against individuals suspected of using their public positions for personal gain.

“EACC remains committed to combating bribery and corruption at public service delivery points and will continue to take firm action against individuals who abuse public office for private gain,” EACC said.
