    Early Life

Edward Zwick was born on October 8, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois, to Ruth and Allen Zwick.

He grew up in a Jewish family and attended New Trier High School. Zwick later enrolled at Harvard University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1974.

After graduating from Harvard, he moved to Los Angeles and continued his education at the AFI Conservatory. He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1975.

His education in theater and filmmaking helped establish the foundation for a career that eventually moved between television and feature films.

    Film Directing Career

Zwick made his feature directorial debut in 1986 with the romantic comedy-drama About Last Night…. The movie was based on David Mamet’s play Sexual Perversity in Chicago and starred Rob Lowe and Demi Moore.

The film performed well commercially and helped establish Zwick as a promising Hollywood director.

In 1989, he directed Glory, a Civil War drama starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Cary Elwes. The film received widespread critical acclaim, while Washington won his first Academy Award for his performance.

Zwick followed Glory with the 1992 road movie Leaving Normal. The film starred Christine Lahti and Meg Tilly but was less successful than his previous work.

He returned to commercial success in 1994 with Legends of the Fall, starring Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn and Julia Ormond. The film earned several award nominations and received another Golden Globe nomination for Zwick as Best Director.

In 1996, Zwick reunited with Denzel Washington for Courage Under Fire. The film, which also starred Meg Ryan, explored the investigation into the death of a female military officer during the Gulf War.

Zwick worked with Washington again on the 1998 political action thriller The Siege. The film also featured Bruce Willis, Annette Bening and Tony Shalhoub. It marked Zwick’s first theatrical film for which he received a writing credit.

The Last Samurai and Blood Diamond

Zwick entered the 2000s with one of his most ambitious projects, The Last Samurai.

Released in 2003, the historical action drama starred Tom Cruise as an American military officer who becomes involved with Japan’s samurai culture. The film was a commercial success and earned multiple Academy Award nominations.

Zwick received the Best Director award from the National Board of Review for the film.

Three years later, he directed Blood Diamond, a political thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly.

The film explored the illegal diamond trade during the civil war in Sierra Leone. DiCaprio and Hounsou both received Academy Award nominations for their performances.

Zwick next directed Defiance, a 2008 World War II drama starring Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell. The film told the story of Jewish brothers who helped rescue and protect people during the Holocaust.

    Love & Other Drugs

In 2010, Zwick returned to comedy and romance with Love & Other Drugs.

The film starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway and was based on Jamie Reidy’s memoir Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman. Zwick directed the movie and shared writing credits.

The project was notable because it represented a departure from the large-scale historical and political dramas that had become closely associated with his career.

    Later Films

Zwick continued directing films during the 2010s.

In 2014, he directed Pawn Sacrifice, a biographical drama about American chess champion Bobby Fischer. Tobey Maguire played Fischer in the film.

Zwick subsequently reunited with Tom Cruise for Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, released in 2016. The action thriller was a sequel to the 2012 film Jack Reacher.

In 2018, Zwick directed Trial by Fire, a biographical drama starring Jack O’Connell and Laura Dern.

The film focused on the case of Cameron Todd Willingham, a Texas man convicted and executed for a fire that killed his three children.

    Film Producing

Zwick has also built an important part of his career as a producer.

In 1985, he founded Bedford Falls Productions with Marshall Herskovitz. The company became involved in numerous film and television projects.

Among the films Zwick produced were Dangerous Beauty, I Am Sam, Abandon and Woman Walks Ahead.

He was also a producer on Shakespeare in Love, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1999, and Traffic, which received a Best Picture nomination.

Producing gave Zwick another avenue to generate income and influence projects even when he was not serving as their director.

    Television Career

Zwick began working in television before establishing himself as a feature film director.

He wrote and directed for the ABC series Family between 1979 and 1980. He later directed the television film Special Bulletin in 1983 and the pilot episode of The Insiders in 1985.

His biggest television breakthrough came in 1987 when he and Marshall Herskovitz created thirtysomething for ABC.

The drama became a major critical and commercial success. Zwick wrote and directed several episodes during its four-season run.

Zwick and Herskovitz later produced the influential teen drama My So-Called Life. They subsequently created Once and Again, which premiered on ABC in 1999.

Once and Again starred Sela Ward and focused on relationships, family life and the challenges faced by a single mother. The series ran for three seasons.

The pair later created Quarterlife, although the series had a much shorter run. NBC aired only one episode in 2008 before canceling it.

Zwick’s later television work included writing an episode of Nashville and directing an episode of the science-fiction series Away.

    Personal Life

Edward Zwick married actress and writer Liberty Godshall in 1982.

The couple has two children, a son and a daughter. Their son, Jesse Zwick, followed his father into the entertainment industry and became a screenwriter and director.

Zwick has maintained a relatively private personal life while continuing to work behind the scenes in Hollywood.
