The Azimio la Umoja Coalition has officially rebranded as the Ukombozi Alliance in a fresh political realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced the new name on Monday, September 21, 2026, during a press briefing attended by other coalition principals, including Siaya Governor James Orengo.
“Moving forward, this alliance shall no longer be called the Azimio La Umoja Coalition; we shall be called the Ukombozi Alliance,” Kalonzo said.
The new alliance will be guided by the political philosophy of “One Term, One Team, One Coalition”, according to Kalonzo.
He said the new political outfit would begin formal engagements with parties and political formations seeking to join the alliance.
Kalonzo announced that the Ukombozi Alliance would convene a meeting on Tuesday, September 22, to strategise on its next political steps, including engagements with the Jubilee Party.
He said important decisions would be made during the meeting as the coalition works to establish its new political structure.
The Wiper leader also announced plans for the formal handover of the instruments of power of the former Azimio la Umoja outfit to the Ukombozi Alliance.
The transition is expected to formally mark the beginning of the new coalition’s operations under its rebranded identity.
Kalonzo further announced that additional political parties would join the Ukombozi Alliance.
Among those expected to be part of the new formation is the Umoja na Maendeleo Party (UMP), led by former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
Former Chief Justice David Maraga, who has expressed interest in the 2027 presidential race, is also expected to join the coalition through his United Green Movement Party (UGM).
Kalonzo said more parties would be announced as the process of formalising the new political alliance progresses.
The rebranding comes amid renewed efforts by opposition and allied political parties to consolidate their support ahead of the 2027 elections.
During the briefing, Kalonzo also welcomed a High Court decision concerning the political rights of retired presidents.
He criticised President William Ruto over what he described as attacks against former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kalonzo argued that the 2027 presidential contest would not be a political battle between Ruto and Kenyatta.
He said Kenyatta had avoided being drawn into the political confrontation despite criticism directed at him.
“It is not, and you can see President Uhuru Kenyatta, apart from coming out and laughing it off, and talking about the Sponyo, he refuses to be drawn into that contest, because the contest will be between William Ruto and the leaders who are challenging him and the people of Kenya. It will not be a contest between him and Uhuru Kenyatta,” Kalonzo said.
He also criticised Ruto’s description of Kenyatta as a “rebel leader”, arguing that such remarks were inconsistent with the constitutional responsibilities of the presidency.
“So, when you call Uhuru Kenyatta a rebel leader, you are actually acting in breach of the Constitution, which you, Mr Ruto, swore to uphold,” Kalonzo said.
