Three Teams Sail Through To CAF Champions League Quarters

Three teams, Etoile du Sahel, Esperance de Tunis and TP Mazembe, sailed through to the quarter-finals of the Caf Champions League at the end of match day 4 on Saturday.

Etoile du Sahel made it out of Group D following a 2-0 win over minnows Mbabane Swallows of Swaziland.

The 2007 champions top the group on 10 points, five clear of Premiero De Agosto heading into match day 5 in August.

Another Tunisian side Esperance de Tunis edged out KCCA of Uganda 1-0 to book a slot in the round of eight. The three points took their tally to 10 points, three off Al Ahly of Egypt.

Five times champions TP Mazembe of DR Congo on the other hand managed to hold MC Alger of Algeria 1-1 on the road to secure a smooth passage.

The Ravens top B on 10 points, five better than MC Alger with two rounds to go.

2016 semi-finalists Zesco United of Zambia complicated their chances of progressing from Group D after losing to de Agosto from a winning position.

Zesco took the lead in Beira in the second half but the hosts managed to equalize before grabbing a dramatic last gasp winner.

The visitors were victims of their own time wasting tactics as referee allowed up-to seven minutes of extra time, giving de Agosto, who were tails-up after the leveler, opportunity to find the winner on the dot.

After a slow start in Group A, record eight-time champions Al Ahly managed a double over newbies Township Rollers of Botswana, edging them out 1-0 in Gaborone to revive their campaign.

South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns equally resuscitated their 2018 campaign in match day 4 with a crucial 2-1 win over visiting AS Togo Port in Pretoria.

The 2016 champions had lost the first leg against the Togolese and nothing but a win would have been acceptable.

Horoya’s 2-0 loss away to defending champions Wydad Casablanca equally boosted their chances of making the quarters.

Both Sundowns and Horoya are tied on five points apiece, three points off leaders Wydad.
