    Tycoon Praful Kumar Who Tried To Bribe Governor Sonko Spends Night In Police Cells

    Nairobi tycoon Praful Kumar Premchand Saula spent the night at the Port police station after he pleaded not guilty to three charges of attempted bribery.  

    The accused person took the plea before  Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Henry Nyakweba.

    The magistrate will give his ruling on the tycoon’s application for bail tady after his counsel Kennedy Marete’s application was granted. He had argued that his client was brought before the court after 4.30 pm.

    The court ruled ruled that the suspect be allowed to spend the night at the local police station to allow police officers get the necessary documents from him.

    Kumar,  who owns Grand  Manor hotel, was charged with an attempt to bribe Nairobi  Governor Michael Mbuvi alias Sonko with Ksh7 million.

    The amount, according to the charge sheet, was intended to ensure the approval and continuation of a construction in a case in which the accused person is involved.

    Kumar was accused that on August 20 at Kikambala within Kilifi county offered a financial advantage of Ksh5 million to Sonko, who is listed as the first witness in the case.

    In a related charge, the accused on the material day at Kanamai in Kikambala within Kilifi county,offered Sonko Ksh1 million on two separate occasions.

    The accused application to be released and take a plea the next day was rejected by the court. He had argued that he was brought to court late in the day after spending more than 24 hours in police custody.
