Gor Mahia left the country early Monday morning for Algiers, Algeria for their final CAF confederation Cup Group D fixture against USM Alger on Wednesday.

A team of 17 players departed the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi at 6.00am local time hopeful of sealing a quarterfinals berth away.

K’ogalo, who jointly top the group alongside their hosts, will need to avoid defeat and pray that Yanga SC don’t lose to Rayon Sports in Kigali, Rwanda in the other group match to sail through.

The coach Dylan Kerr’s side bottled up a chance to finish the business when they unexpectedly went down to Rayon Sports 2-1 at the Kasarani Stadium two weeks ago.

A draw against the Rwandans would have seen them become the first Kenyan club to make the round of eight of the continental championship.

But all is not lost for Gor, who on Saturday retained their Kenyan Premier League title after beating their arch rivals AFC Leopards 2-0 in the Mashemeji Derby at Kasarani.

Buoyed by the achievement, the 17-time Kenyan champions can fancy a result away to Algiers, who were held by Rayon 1-1 in their last game at home and lost 2-1 to Yanga away in their last outing.

Drafted in the squad by the Malta-born Englishman is defender Karim Nizigiyimana who is just emerging from a long term injury.

The Burundian showed flashes of his former best in Saturday’s win against AFC Leopards and is expected to command a starting role in the right full back role against USMA.

Goalkeeper Fredrick Odhiambo, who has also impressed in Gor’s two matches has also made the trip alongside veteran Boniface Oluoch with Shaban Odhoji being left out.

The Wednesday match will kick off at 6.00pm local time and will be LIVE on Supersport 9.
