A major showdown looms on Monday as public service vehicles (PSV) have declared that the matatu strike is still on, as government begins implementation of Michuki rules.

The Federation of Public Transport Operators advised its members to withdraw their services starting Monday, in protest of the law enforcement, arguing that they need more time to comply.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i maintained that the crackdown is still on and any PSV found in violation of michuki traffic laws will face instant fines or arrest.

“There is no turning back from Monday, they must comply including insurance companies stopping dubious deals,” Matiangi said.

“Some people might think we are joking or will relent after a while. We will stay the course until we restore sanity on the roads,” IG Joseph Boinnet said.

Some of the rules which matatus should comply with include: they should have functional seat belts, drivers and conductors should have identification cards and be able to produce it on demand, vehicles should carry only the designated number of passengers and obey traffic rules among others, failure to which warrants a conditioned fine or arrest.

Commuters are bracing themselves for a long day as hiked fares, shortage of public transport and difficulty to get around to places is expected.
