On August 5, 2026, Rwanda’s Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) dropped a bombshell on the alcohol industry. In a public notice, the regulator announced the immediate suspension of 52 alcoholic beverage brands imported from six countries—Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, India, Burundi, and Poland. Importers were ordered to recall every single bottle from the market.
This wasn’t a random decision. The suspension is part of a much wider crackdown on illicit and substandard alcohol that has been sweeping across Rwanda. The trigger? A devastating public health crisis.
According to Health Minister Dr Sabin Nsanzimana, since the beginning of 2026, more than 50 people have died after consuming illicit alcoholic beverages. Over 100 others have lost their sight, and more than 500 people have sought medical treatment. Authorities have described the situation as nothing short of a toxic alcohol epidemic.
The crackdown actually began days earlier. On August 1, Rwanda FDA revoked all import licences for neutral spirit (ethanol)—the highly concentrated alcohol used in beverage production. By early August, over 130 local manufacturing facilities had been shut down and their licences revoked. Now, the net has widened to catch imported brands too.

From Tanzania:
Konyagi (Tanzania Distilleries Limited) – one of the country’s most widely recognised spirits
Diamond Rock Gin, Cuca Vodka, Blackhat, Campfire Gin, and Tzee-branded spirits from Serengeti Breweries
From Kenya:
Gilbeys Gin (Kenya Breweries Limited)
Kenya King, Safari Gin, and Avalon Premium Vodka
From Uganda:
Bond 7 Whisky (Uganda Breweries Limited)
Gilbey’s Flavoured Gin, Club 5 Gin, Tembo Liqueur, Campfire Gin, and multiple X5-branded products from John Distillers
From India:
Indian brands make up the bulk of the list, including Zoya Premium Gin, Yello Designer Whisky, and Magic Moments Chocolate Vodka
Also affected: brands from Burundi and Poland
The Rwanda FDA’s orders are strict and leave no room for delay:
Importers must initiate an immediate full recall and submit recall reports within three working days
Distributors and retailers must stop selling and distributing affected products immediately
Consumers are advised to stop consuming the suspended brands
All advertisements and promotional materials for these brands must be taken down
The regulator has warned that additional products could be added to the list as enforcement continues.
This action didn’t come out of nowhere. Just days earlier, President Paul Kagame delivered a stark warning to young Rwandans, describing alcohol as a “religion” that was killing the country’s youth. “Everything we have been talking about… this thing will kill you before you realise your ambitions,” he said.
Rwanda already maintains some of the toughest alcohol regulations in the region—bars must close at 1am on weekdays and 2am on weekends. This latest crackdown suggests the government is taking the public health crisis deadly seriously.
The Rwanda FDA’s notice didn’t specify exactly what safety or quality failures triggered the suspension of each brand. Whether laboratory tests found contamination, dangerous additives, or simply non-compliance with labelling standards remains unclear. What is clear is that Rwanda is sending a strong message: when public health is at stake, even well-known brands from neighbouring countries are not above the law.
