    Police is trying to investigate what caused fire at the USIU-Africa cafeteria which is used by staff, faculty and students of the premier private university.

    According to sources within the police, fire broke out some minutes to 11pm when the cafeteria was already closed and staff were on their way home.

    The fire which is suspected to have been caused by faulty electrical installations, consumed most of the wirings leading to a complete blackout. The roof was also destroyed in the inferno.

    Staff and students have blamed the university administration led by Prof. Paul Zeleza for not having the maintenance team follow keenly on state of disrepair as used to happen during the reign of Prof. Freida Brown.

    Prof. Freida Brown was keen on all maintenance and state of the campus, keeping a keen eye on what was falling down and misplaced objects. It’s now common to find unused electrical equipments and machines in places like the cafeteria with no proper explanation if there were plans to properly store or repair them.

    Prof. Zeleza confirmed the fire in an email to the USIU-Africa community. It read;

    “I am writing to inform you of a fire that occurred last night at the University cafeteria, where I can gratefully confirm, no casualties occurred. At around 10pm, University authorities were notified of a fire in the Cafeteria’s kitchen, who with the assistance of the Security and Maintenance Departments, Organizational Safety and Health Committee members, as well as the Nairobi County Fire Brigade and officers from the Kasarani Police Station, managed to successfully contain the fire. “

    Another;

    The university is experiencing some hiccups in leadership as the Legal Director is seen to be calling the shots maintain a stranglehold on the Vice Chancellor, who is always travelling to destinations around the world while claiming the he is fundraising for university projects. The trips by the Vice Chancellor have mostly not borne any fruits.

    The university is also not encouraging any efforts by the student community to speak out with those who are vocal in university forums immediately silenced through bans or outright intimidations.
