Kenya Airways has confirmed that passengers departing from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) are facing delays of between two and three hours amid ongoing air traffic control challenges.
The national carrier said the disruption was affecting flight schedules and apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused.
In a notice to customers, Kenya Airways attributed the delays to challenges affecting air traffic control operations.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this situation has caused to travel plans,” Kenya Airways said.
“Our teams are working with the aviation authorities and relevant airport stakeholders to ensure safe operations and minimise the inconvenience and disruption to our customers’ travel.”
The airline urged passengers travelling through JKIA to remain patient as efforts continue to address the situation and restore normal flight operations.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has warned passengers of delays affecting some departing flights at airports across the country.
The authority said it was working closely with aviation agencies, airlines and other stakeholders to manage the disruption and minimise its impact on travellers.
“Kenya Airports Authority PLC wishes to advise passengers and other airport users that some departing flights are currently experiencing delays at our airports,” KAA said.
KAA said measures were being implemented to facilitate the smooth flow of airport operations and reduce further disruptions.
The authority advised passengers to contact their respective airlines for the latest information on flight schedules and departure times.
The delays come amid disruptions at JKIA, where airport operations were affected on Sunday following a go-slow involving staff of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).
Several flights scheduled to depart from JKIA from as early as 8am remained on the ground for several hours, leaving hundreds of passengers waiting for updates.
The disruption has caused frustration among travellers, with passengers facing uncertainty over their departure times.
Airlines have been forced to manage the impact of the disruption as efforts continue to restore normal operations at the country’s main international gateway.
JKIA handles thousands of passengers travelling to and from Kenya each day and serves as the country’s principal aviation hub.
Passengers scheduled to travel through JKIA and other affected airports have been advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
Travellers have also been urged to confirm their flight status directly with their airlines before heading to the airport.
