Seven officials of the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) have been arrested over a Sh660 million scandal involving the procurement of hydrant valves.

General Manager (Finance) Samuel Owuor was among those arrested today by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives in a sting operation conducted to unravel massive corruption that has hit the organisation.

The sleuths are looking for six others, including former Managing Director Charles Tanui.

According to EACC, the tender was inflated by more than 1,000 per cent, making it one of the biggest scandals at KPC.

This comes a day after five KPC managers were charged with the loss of Sh1.9 billion in the construction of the Kisumu Oil Jetty.

The five, Joe Sang (Managing Director), Gloria Khafafa (company secretary), Vincent Cheruiyot (GM supply chain management), Billy Aseka (general manager infrastructure) and Nicholas Gitobu (procurement manager) were charged with abuse of office, willful failure to comply with applicable procedures and guidelines relating to the management of public funds and engaging in a project without prior planning.

Sang is accused for being at the center of graft allegations that saw the company lose over 23 million litres of fuel.

Preliminary probe showed that there was no such spillage, pointing out to possible theft by the body.

The firm has been riddled with graft scandals dating back to 2014  when it tendered to deliver 60 hydrant pit valves for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at a cost of Ksh647 million.

Appearing before chief magistrate Douglas Ongoti, the five were released on a Sh2 million cash bail each.

Following the scandals, Hudson Andambi was appointed as the interim managing director at KPC.
