Indian liberation hero Mahatma Gandhi’s statue has been pulled down following protests from students and lecturers from the University of Ghana after they termed him a racist during his time in South Africa.

Lecturers and students from the University started the protest two years ago stating that the Indian liberator had made Africans look inferior during the fight against colonialism. He appeared to have seen the Indian race as superior to the African one and in that light fought for the rights of Indians separately while calling ‘Kaffirs’.

The lecturers and students of the University of Accra said that they agitated for the removal of the statue as a symbol of self respect and did have anything to do with diplomatic ties between Ghana and India. They said that they needed to show self respect to their heroes before acknowledging other heroes.

“If we indeed don’t show any self-respect for our heroes, how can the world respect us? This is victory for black dignity and self-respect. The campaign has paid off,” one student stated.

The University’s Authority has however declined to comment while government Authorities have stated that the statue would be relocated to reduce the tension.

The Statue was erected by India’s former President Pranab Mukherjee at the University of Ghana in Accra two years ago as a symbol of ties between the two nations.

Last year a group of South Africans started anti-Gandhi campaigns, vandalized a statue of the Indian leader stating that he was against black Africans during his stay.

Here is one of Gandhi’s quotes that have had him seen as a racist in African eyes

‘Ours is one continual struggle against a degradation sought to be inflicted upon us by the Europeans who desire to degrade us to the level of the raw Kaffir whose occupation is hunting, and whose sole ambition is to collect a certain number of cattle to buy a wife and, then pass his life in indolence and nakedness.’

Anti Gandhi campaigners in Malawi are also protesting the erection of the global peace icon in their capital Blantyre.
