    Siblings

Anke has one sibling, an older brother named Frank. Her parents, Edgar and Gerda Huber, ran a variety store and owned apartments.

The family maintained a grounded approach to her tennis career, with her father introducing her to the sport at age seven.

He later entrusted her development to coaches rather than becoming an overbearing tennis parent.

    Career

Huber began playing tennis at seven under her father’s guidance and quickly excelled in the junior ranks.

She captured German age-group titles and the European junior championship.

She made her professional debut in 1989 and claimed her first WTA title in 1990 at Schenectady at just 15 years old.

An early breakthrough came with a memorable home victory over Martina Navratilova in the 1991 Filderstadt final.

Throughout the 1990s, she established herself as a consistent top-20 player. She reached a career-high ranking of world No. 4 on 14 October 1996.

That same year, she contested her only Grand Slam final, losing to Monica Seles at the Australian Open.

She also reached the final of the 1995 WTA Tour Championships, where she pushed Steffi Graf to five sets in a memorable match.

Huber won titles on all four surfaces. She competed at the Olympics in 1992 and 1996.

She also represented Germany in the Fed Cup for many years and contributed to the team’s 1992 title.

Huber partnered Boris Becker to victory at the 1995 Hopman Cup.

Persistent injuries and a desire for a different life eventually led her to retire. Her final match came against Justine Henin in Munich in October 2001.

    Accolades

Huber captured 12 WTA singles titles and one doubles title, winning Hamburg in 1997 with Mary Pierce.

She finished runner-up in 11 additional singles finals, including the 1996 Australian Open and the 1995 year-end championships.

Her career highlights include reaching the French Open semifinals in 1993.

She also made multiple fourth-round appearances at Wimbledon.

At the US Open, she reached the quarterfinals in 1999 and 2000.

She helped Germany win the Fed Cup in 1992 and the Hopman Cup in 1995.

Huber reached the top 10 in 1992 and peaked at No. 4 in 1996. She spent ten seasons inside the top 20.

She also reached the Olympic quarterfinals in Barcelona in 1992.
