Faced with MRC Threat, Safaricom Now Suspends “Niko na Safaricom” Coast Tour

Safaricom has suspended the Mombasa leg of the “Niko na Safaricom Live” tour citing security concerns at the Coast. The coastal towns in Kenya are facing security challenges as a gang of secessionists claim that the region is not part of Kenya.

Safaricom’s move now affect all road shows, campus storms and the eventual concert which was slated for the 10th of November.

Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said, “This was a tough decision because we were looking forward to having a wonderful engagement with our customers in Mombasa.  The cancellation is a precautionary approach to the Security situation in Mombasa and not a response to any specific threat.  We recognise the hard work that is being done to improve security at the coast yet at the same time we must put the safety of our customers, staff and operations the centre of all we do.”

The 5 month “Niko na Safaricom Live” entertainment extravaganza kicked off in Meru in September, then moved to Kisumu, Eldoret  with the  Grand Finale in Nairobi on the15th of December.  A cross-section of Kenya’s leading entertainers including Camp Mulla, Jaguar, Jimmi Gait, Sauti Sol, Size 8 and comedy sensation Jalango  have been headlining the ‘Niko na Safaricom Live’ concerts across the country.
