National Gun Owners Association have withdrawn a case filed at the High Court barring fresh vetting of civilian gun owners.

This was after its members held talks with government officials. Interior CS Fred Matiang’i disbanded the former Firearms Licensing Board following claims of massive corruption in the guns licensing process.

This led to poor records management in what is also blamed to be the cause of firearms misuse.

“There was good understanding in the meeting and we understood where the government was coming from. They also understood where we were coming from,” NGAO chairman Anthony Wahome said.

“The CS assured us and undertook that no member of NGAO who has a valid firearm certificate and is holding firearms legally would suffer any arbitrary revocation of their firearm license.”

On December 17 CS Matiang’i had ordered for mandatory fresh vetting of gun owners and thereafter issued with new smart licences after the vetting, review and authentication of their weapons and certificates.

“Some lapses in the licensure of firearms dealers, civilian holders, and shooting range owners have led to the illegal possession, transfer, misuse, and trafficking of such weapons thereby posing major threats to national and regional security,” he said.

Wahome reiterated the association’s support of the digitization of civilian gun holders in the country.
