County Government of Nakuru has employed new recruits to replace the hundreds of striking nurses.

Speaking during an interview, Nakuru level 5 Hospital medical superintendent, Joseph Mburu, confirmed that the county has contracted 192 nurses to help in the provision of medical services to those in need.

According to Dr Mburu, the nurses who have been employed aren’t entirely new as most of them were working under contracts with either the county governments or the national government, while others were interns.

He further noted that the new “fall-back” plan has enabled the hospital to continue offering medical services without hitches.

This happens even as in Murang’a Governor, Mwangi wa Iria, in a parallel meeting, was commissioning 200 nurses to replace those who are on strike.

Governor Wa Iria noted that the move to replace the striking nurses was instigated by the directive given by President Uhuru Kenyatta, to have striking nurses replace if they would not go back to work.

The newly recruited nurses have been contracted for a 5-year period by the county government.

The County boss further added that employing the new recruits would ensure “efficiency” in the provision of medical services in the county.

In an almost similar account, Kisii county health workers officially called off their strike today, Tuesday.

The county government reached an agreement with the nurses which they settled to have their issues implemented withing 30 days, failure to which the nurses will go back to the streets.

The County government of Busia could not reach any agreement as the nurses’ officials snubbed a meeting that was called by Governor Sospeter Ojaamong’.
