Former Sports, Heritage and Culture Cabinet Secretary (CS) Rashid Echesa has spoken for the first time since his sacking on Friday by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking during a funeral in Kakamega County, Echesa divulged that he did not know why he was dropped from the President’s cabinet.

“It is within President Kenyatta’s mandate to hire and fire but still I would also want to know what happened,” Echesa noted.

However, he was haste to thank the Head of State for giving him an opportunity to serve in that capacity for a year.

Echesa then called on his supporters especially those from Kakamega to remain calm.

“I am cool and also want to urge my supporters and Luhyas to remain calm. I remain grateful to the President for offering me an opportunity to serve in his cabinet,” he added.

Speaking during the same event, Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali explained that the decision to fire Echesa was ill-advised as he was among the few leaders who campaigned for Jubilee in Western.

“It was tough selling the Jubilee agenda in Western and Echesa was among people who went out of their way to propagate Jubilee and create in-roads for Kenyatta to access the region,” Washiali disclosed.

Washiali is among the leaders who have disputed the removal of Echesa from the Cabinet, with most of them wondering what led to such a decision.

During a Cabinet Reshuffle which was announced on Friday, the CS was dismissed and replaced by Amina Mohamed.
