Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga and a section of opposition leaders have condoled with victims of the Toy Market fire inferno in Kibra, Nairobi County.

Speaking on Tuesday at Toy Market hours after the fire was contained, the former prime minister accused land grabbers of being behind the fire.

“..kuna wale wanyakuzi ambao wananyakua wakiona kiwanja mahali wanaingia wananyakua.. nina hakika kwamba hao ndio wamefanya hii njama ya kuchoma kesho waje na askari hapa waanze kujenga (I am confident that notorious land grabbers are behind this incident),” he said.

According to Odinga, this is not the first time the market is experiencing the unfortunate incident that has left many counting millions in loses.

“…Wameleta hasara kubwa sana kwa wafanya biashara hapa (They have caused huge loses to the busines men here),” he said.

“Hatutakubali hayo (We won’t allow this),” he added.

To prevent possible take over the Special United Nations envoy, urged Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to take immediate action and erect structures for the affected victims.

Bwana Sonko ataingia hapa sasahivi, akiingia nshampatia instructions..Mabati imeingia hapa na ujenzi imeanza.. askari wasimame hapa wakilinda wananchi wakijenga (Governor Sonko is about to arrive at the scene, once he is here, I have instructed him to provide materials, iron sheets and ensure reconstruction begins.. police officers should also provide security as the traders put up their stalls),” he said.

He reiterated that Governor Sonko must protect the market which is in direct control of the county government.

“I want to tell the governor that this market is under the control of the county government,” he said.

He accused suspects linked to National Youth Service (NYS) scandal for the stall of Kibera slum upgrade project, the area he served as a Member of Parliament from 1992-2013.

He however, assured residents that the government will soon take up the project  in bid to better the lives of the locals.

Further, Raila called for speedy investigations into the incident and bring to book those behind the inferno.

No fatalities were reported and the cause of the fire is yet to be established.
