Siaya Senator James Orengo has refuted claims that he recently held a four-hour meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta .

The senate minority leader affirmed that The Standard misquoted him when they published a story highlighting that the meeting’s agenda was 2022 presidential succession talks.

According to the story published on Thursday, Orengo met the Head of State for hours as they deliberated on ways of ensuring ODM ‘fulfills its dream of capturing power.”

The local daily quoted the legislator saying, “ODM is going for political power, and when we are holding these meetings our eyes are set on 2022.

The contention for power is going to come from a formation with ODM in it and formation of Jubilee where Uhuru is playing a role.”

However, speaking at a fundraiser, Orengo asserted that the opposition party’s engagements with the ruling party is above board and is aimed at strengthening ways of fighting corruption and impunity in the country.

Orengo posed: “As a matter of fact, I only reiterated our well-known support to Uhuru’s well-meaning efforts to combat corruption and shameless looting of public resources. What is wrong with that?”

According to a source close to the Star, Orengo is noted to have been offended by the news piece as it was a misrepresentation of his pursuits.

“The senator only affirmed that ODM as a party will be on the ballot, pitching for the Presidency in one shape or another and nothing else,” the source claimed.

Adding that: “It is regretful the paper sought to drag the name of Raila and Uhuru in reporting the issue said by the minority leader.”

There has been unease in the political circles over the handshake that President Kenyatta had with opposition leader Raila Odinga with many speculating that it has an agenda towards the 2022 general polls.
